Ben Wicks grew up chiefly in London's East End during World War II, but spent two years as an evacuee in four different homes elsewhere in Britain. After leaving school at the age of fourteen, he had some thirty jobs before settling into journalism. In this book, he draws on personal wartime recollections sent to him from all over the world to produce a poignant record of both the joy and pain of post-war homecoming.
