William Henry Trewolla Olive was born in 1865 in Truro, England, and apprenticed in woodworking and architecture. He immigrated to British Columbia, where he worked on construction of the province's new parliament buildings. His expertise in boat building took him to the Yukon in 1897 during the Klondike Gold Rush. The Bennett Lake and Klondike Navigation Company hired Olive to manage the construction of sternwheelers. After his sojourn in the North, he moved to Alberta with his wife and children, and became a homesteader, garage owner, and justice of the peace. Olive began to write his memoirs in the 1930s and completed his memoir of the Klondike in 1939. He died the next year.
