This book is a volume of letters by Frederick Gower Turnbull, an engineer from Yorkshire who went to India to work at Jessop's Steel Company outside of Calcutta. Most of the letters in this book are addressed to Fred's mother. The letters themselves give us a fascinating look into Fred's time in India, which includes the last years of British rule and the movement toward independence and partition. He eventually died in a 1949 riot - pushed alive into a furnace at the steel company.
