Latvian poetess Elza Kezbere died in 2011 in New York at the age of 100. Elza Kezbere was born in Tirza village. In 1944, she fled to Germany and eventually to New York in 1950. She wrote nine books of poetry. She wrote about love, Latvian nature, her memories of home, as well as sorrow and resignation. More than 140 of her poems have been used as lyrics for popular songs. She was a recipient of the Three Star Order.
