Born at Winnipeg in 1920, Maara Haas received a degree in journalism from UC Berkeley, returning to Winnipeg where she taught creative writing and poetry in the adult education program of the YMCA. She was well known for her readings which she has presented on the CBC's "This Country in the Morning". She performed in several Manitoba theatrical productions including Andorra, Galileo, and Three Penny Opera. She was an ACTRA award nominee in the Best Dramatic Radio Writer category. She also received the Lady Eaton Award for her literary satire "One Hundred Years of Poetry, French and English" (1967). She died in 2012 at the age of 92. Of her work, George Amabile said, "It has a driving, generous, affectionate energy which brings us intimately into her world. But there is more. Much more."
